Alpago is a splendid mountain bowl, made up of five municipalities, situated in the south of the Belluno province, easy to reach from both Treviso and Venice. It is protected by a crown of mountain tops: the Dolada, Col Nudo, the Teverone and the Monte Cavallo range. Its heart is the Lake of Santa Croce, near the village of Farra, an ancient Longobard settlement, which has made the Lake its main attraction: wind surf, sailing, water sports, camping and swimming are some of the possibilities available for numerous tourists. Tambre borders the provinces of Treviso and Pordenone; the nearby Forest of Cansiglio figures as the most important woodland in the Veneto-Friuli Prealps and the second forest in Italy. Chies, at the northern limit, has the largest land area, including a wild, unspoiled landscape. Puos, in the middle, is the centre for local services for the whole valley, and, finally, Pieve has the industrial area but also a launching point for hang and paragliders on the slopes of Mount Dolada.

Alpago, a mountain of nature "..to those who look for it, Alpago shows itself in all its shining splendour: it shines up from its placid lake (.) ; it shines in a variety of colours which coat its hills in autumn; it radiates in spring and summer with the luxuriant vegetation of its meadows, fields and trees and their every shade of green, the predominant colour by which it is distinguished and often described - the green bowl of Alpago; its mountains sparkle in the sun when they wear their hood of snow or reflect the red rays of a distant sunset."
Umberto Trame, "The bowl of Alpago in the Eastern Dolomites", Venice 1932 |
